THE ARTIST

Mariana Bontempo is a Brazilian fine art photographer and visual artist based in the United States, whose work investigates portraiture as a narrative and psychological field. Her practice centers on presence, duration, and interiority, developing images that sustain attention and invite contemplation. Working primarily with children, she approaches the portrait as a space where individual presence and symbolic meaning coexist.

Photography initiates her process through the encounter with the subject, establishing light, gaze, and physical presence as the foundation of the image. From this point, the work continues through digital painting as an authorial extension of the photographic act. Painterly decisions shape volume, silence, and visual rhythm, allowing the image to unfold gradually and acquire narrative density over time.

Light functions as a structural element throughout her practice, organizing perception and psychological weight. Subtle transitions, calibrated shadow, and restrained contrast guide the viewer’s experience, encouraging a slower and more attentive mode of looking. Each portrait develops as a sustained visual space, holding its own duration and remaining open to interpretation.

Bontempo’s work draws from classical visual discipline while operating through contemporary digital processes. Her portraits function as communicative images, activating reflection, memory, and psychological resonance through a narrative built on suspension, presence, and contemplation.



Her work has been exhibited internationally and has received multiple awards, including the Leonardo da Vinci Prize in Milan, The Great Masters of New York Award. and the title of Master Photographer (Child Category) at the National Association of Portrait & Child Photographers (NAPCP).
